Kathleen Phelps, LCSW
Kathleen Phelps specializes in issues relating to trauma, both recent and past traumas. Trauma events in one’s past can lead to anxiety, depression, grief, self-esteem, compulsive overeating, binge eating and body image issues, and other self-destructive issues, which Kathleen also treats. She loves looking at resolving underlying issues of trauma to help people work through issues that may be holding them back or keeping them stuck in an area of their life. Kathleen enjoys assisting adults navigate through their current life stressors.
Kathleen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 20 years of clinical experience as a therapist. She has worked in many different types of clinical outpatient settings, including 16 years at Kaiser Permanente and other San Diego area psychiatric facilities with diverse populations.
Kathleen believes in a well-rounded approach to health.
Kathleen is a Certified EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapist and uses that as a primary modality to treat trauma. She additionally uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) when helping people work through anxiety and depression, as she recognizes there is not a “one size fits all” approach when working with people of varying backgrounds and needs. Mindfulness practices and grounding techniques are an important part of her work, as well, especially when stress is a huge part of her client’s life. Kathleen understands that identifying thoughts as well as behaviors that are interfering with goals are an important part of therapy. She helps clients work towards their larger goals and believes therapists can be a guide towards that purpose, to demonstrate skills and techniques to work through life’s issues. Being able to learn to accept the current moment just as it is while trying to change oneself and work towards goals are not mutually exclusive.
Kathleen is a Lecturer and Field Faculty Member at San Diego State University’s School of Social Work, as teaching others to be therapists is a passion of hers. Learning as well as teaching the newest skills and techniques in the field inspires Kathleen. She encourages everyone to be motivated to be their best selves.
Kathleen received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from University of California, San Diego and her Master’s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State University.
